The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge suffered major damage from the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake that demanded the massive bridge to undergo a series of retrofits and improvements.

Smith-Emery provided the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge project with numerous inspections and testing services including precast concrete testing which consist of site and shop inspections; concrete and aggregate testing on-site; structural steel testing, reinforcing steel testing, rebar coupler testing, welding inspections, full service NDT testing including magnetic particle, ultrasonic testing and radiographic examinations. We also monitored welds and high strength bolts and can confidently claim to have monitored every single weld and high strength bold that was used for the Self-Anchored Suspension Span.
